…on not counting yourself out

In my business, which supports the business of others who are building - often from the ground up - I am realizing a common theme: comparison drives down confidence.

Everyday I speak with clients who lament how far they are from the perceived gold standard or their competition who have been “at it” for 5 - 10 years longer than them, and how challenging it’ll be to get there. Don’t get me wrong - these aren’t people who are saying the end goal isn’t worth the work - they’re just understandably focused on all it might take to get “there”. Funny enough - if you talk to those who are further ahead in business building, they’re also trying to climb a steeper hill, and perhaps don’t feel as far away from newer entrants. It is one of the truest cases of Perception as Reality.

In my own business, I often run into the same thinking and feelings. If I allow comparison to be my focus, I lose sight of what I offer to my partners. While it’s EASY to be focused on what has yet to be achieved, it is wholly more gratifying to ground myself (and my clients!) in all that has been done and is within reach that can and should be seen as success.

All this to say - don’t count yourself out. If you’re building a personal business, an offshoot of an existing company, or working to better your current roles, bet on yourself. If you need help codifying your success, you know where to find your number one cheerleader (here, it’s me).
